(Washington D.C.) - Surviving members of the Ghost Army, a unit that helped defeat the Nazi's in World War Two, were awarded with a Congressional Gold Medal during a ceremony on Capitol Hill Thursday.

The unit of about 13-hundred U.S. soldiers were given orders to deceive the Nazis and misdirect German forces using camouflage, inflatable tanks, sound effects and other tactics.

Three of the seven surviving Ghost Army veterans who were sworn to secrecy for 50 years were in attendance.

Bernard Bluestein, of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, served in the visual deception unit of the 603rd Camouflage Engineers. John Christman served as a demolition specialist for the 406th Engineer Combat Company, and Seymour Nussenbaum served in the 603rd and helped make the unit's counterfeit patches.
