An elusive, iridescent, sand-swimming golden mole not seen since before the second world war has been rediscovered in South Africa.

The mole is blind but has excellent hearing that senses vibrations caused by movement above ground.

It has been featured among the “most wanted” on a list of lost species.

The mole has now been rediscovered 86 years after its last sighting.
