Ryan Newman Survives Spectacular Crash in Daytona 500

NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is expected to recover after a spectacular crash during the final lap of the Daytona 500. Ryan was coming out of Turn 4 when he got turned around and his number 6 car went airborne.

Cory Lajoie's #32 car then slammed into the driver's side window of Newman's Chevy at nearly 200-mph, and race fans feared the worst.

Newman's mangled car spewed sparks at it moved through the tri-oval at Daytona.

Rescue teams put out a fire and erected black curtains around the wreck while they cut Newman out of his car. He was put into an ambulance and driven, by police escort, to Halifax Health, a Level One trauma hospital located a block away from the Daytona International Speedway.

With the race broadcast over, NASCAR fans turned to twitter for updates on "The Rocket Man's" condition.

It took about two-hours before NASCAR officials addressed the media and confirmed the good news. Newman's injuries are not life-threatening, but he is in serious condition.

While fans feared the worst, Denny Hamlin went on to win the second-closest finish ever at the Daytona 500. Hamlin nosed out Ryan Blaney by just 0.014 seconds.

The NASCAR Cup Series move out west with the next race this Sunday in Las Vegas.
