Marlins Fall In Extra Inning Thriller

The Marlins lost to the Pirates 6-5 in 12 innings tonight, making it the fourth straight season opening lose for the Fish.

But there were plenty of bright spots during the game for the young season. Jesus Luzardo got the nod as the opening day starter, and didn't disappoint. The South Florida native went five innings, tallying eight strikeouts and allowing only two earned runs. Offensively, Jake Burger led the way for the Marlins going 3-4 with three RBI. The Fish led the game most of the night, but the pirates were able to hang around to force extra innings late in the game. Pittsburgh was able to tie the game with two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth against the Marlins bullpen. Highlighting the Marlins bullpen was Declan Cronin who pitched all three extra innings, but ultimately he did give up the game winning hit that scored Ke'Bryan Hayes in the top of the 12th inning. The Marlins then went down in order to end the game.

Luis Ortiz collected the win for the Pirates, while Cronin takes the lose and Jose Hernandez picked up the save.

The next game is Friday at loanDepot Park with first pitch at 7:10 p.m., and pregame coverage starts at 6:40 p.m. on FOX Sports 940am.
