West Palm Beach Police are warning against shooting guns into the air to celebrate the new year.

The warning comes a year after a teen was hit by a stray bullet while trying to celebrate New Year's Eve.

Police call celebratory gunfire "a dangerous practice that can injure and even kill." They point out that while it "may be culturally accepted in other countries, shooting guns into the air to celebrate is not only dangerous but illegal in Florida," reminding residents that falling bullets can injure and kill.

The agency also says that property damage can occur if a bullet gets lodged into cars or the roofs of homes.

West Palm Beach PD warns that they will find the people responsible for celebratory gunfire by using ShotSpotter technology, which pinpoints where gunfire originates.
