Tampa, FL - A Florida Highway Patrol trooper successfully intercepted an impaired wrong-way driver on Interstate 275 early Sunday morning.

According to reports, the trooper was traveling in the southbound lanes of I-275 when he saw the headlights of a Kia Sportage coming toward him around 3:50 a.m. Sunday.

The trooper performed a PIT maneuver to stop the vehicle, which was captured on the trooper's dash camera.

The vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier wall but the driver attempted to flee the scene.

The trooper intervened to prevent the driver from leaving again.

Authorities say the driver appeared to have slow, slurred speech and smelled of alcohol.

The driver was found to be in possession of oxycodone and was arrested on charges including DUI, hit-and-run, possession of a controlled substance, and fleeing and eluding.
