Sanibel, FL - A multi-agency response successfully stopped a runaway boat circling near the Sanibel Causeway on Saturday.

The incident unfolded after the boat's driver was reportedly ejected into the water following a collision with another vessel.

The Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), Lee County Sheriff's Office (LCSO), Sanibel Police Department, TowBoatUS, and Sea Tow all joined forces to secure the runaway vessel.

"It was a confusing situation at first," said Isis Wilkins, a visitor from Atlanta. "I saw commotion and didn't realize the seriousness until everyone around me started paying close attention."

Thankfully, officials confirmed there were no injuries. However, Captain James Anholt of Sea Tow emphasized the potential dangers of such an incident.

"It could have gone very wrong," Captain Anholt stated. "The runaway boat posed a threat to the ejected driver, other vessels, and nearby property."

First responders successfully utilized float ropes to stall the engine and halt the vessel's uncontrolled circling.

The LCSO is highlighting the importance of kill switches in preventing similar situations. "Always wear your kill switch lanyard," they advise. "If you're ejected, the engine shuts off immediately, stopping the boat."

The FWC is currently leading the investigation into the cause of the collision.
