Many residents opposed a move by Jupiter to ditch Palm Beach County Fire Rescue in favor of developing its own fire department and now there's contention over the building of a fire station.

The Town Council on Tuesday approved a plan to rezone 3 acres of a historic dog park to locate a new fire station.

“It’s unfortunate they keep talking about how it’s just a land use change and we don’t know what’s going to be there. We all know what’s going to be there. They all admitted it to the council, so I’m a little bit disappointed in our elected officials.”

Tommy Hearden tells CBS 12 News that he lives next to Cinquez Park and doesn't want all the noise.

Town staff have identified the site as the best spot for a fire station, citing research that shows it would allow faster response times to high-demand neighborhoods.

A second reading on the Future Land Use Map Amendment will be held July 16th.
