Wrong-Way DUI Crash Leads to Arrest in Davenport

Davenport, FL - A man allegedly driving drunk in the wrong direction crashed into a police car and fled the scene before being arrested by Polk County deputies on Tuesday.

According to a news release from the Davenport Police Department, 21-year-old Jose Enrique Hernandez-Gonazalez was driving a pickup truck in the southbound lane of North Boulevard around 1:35 a.m.

Police report that Hernandez-Gonazalez, who admitted to drinking at a family party, struck the police vehicle head-on before fleeing the scene.

Polk County deputies later located and apprehended Hernandez-Gonazalez.

He told investigators he hit "something hard" but claimed he was unaware of what he struck due to intoxication.

Hernandez-Gonazalez was arrested on charges of driving under the influence (DUI), leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver's license.
