Man Accused of Smashing Car Windows with Golf Club Following Car Crash

Cape Coral, FL - A traffic accident in Southwest Florida took a violent turn when a man allegedly used a golf club to smash a vehicle's windows on Sunday.

According to the Cape Coral Police Department, officers responded to the scene of an accident around 12:21 p.m. at the intersection of Cape Coral Parkway E and Del Prado Boulevard S.

Upon arrival, officers found a damaged Chevrolet Malibu and a Ford F150 with a utility trailer in the left turning lane, with witnesses reporting a fight in progress.

Police say one of the drivers, identified as 38-year-old Anthony Guzman Garcia, was seen standing next to the Ford F150 covered in blood.

Witnesses claimed that Guzman Garcia had rear-ended the Chevrolet Malibu, causing it to collide with a Jeep Wrangler.

The Jeep driver and passenger, who tried to photograph Garcia's license plate, reported to police that Garcia became aggressive, shoving the driver toward oncoming traffic and punching the passenger.

Garcia then allegedly retrieved a golf club from his truck, shattered the Jeep's driver-side window, and used the broken club to stab at the driver.

The Jeep occupants, injured by the shattered glass, moved their vehicle across the street to wait for police.

The Malibu driver, who had a child in her car, reported minor injuries and confirmed Garcia's aggressive behavior and the subsequent assault on the Jeep.

Officers noted that Garcia appeared agitated and disoriented upon their approach, and claimed he had been attacked by someone that pointed a gun at him.

While speaking with a firefighter, Garcia lost consciousness and was taken to a local hospital, where he became combative, spitting blood at a medic and requiring restraint.

Medical staff reported that Garcia had a blood alcohol level of .177.

As officers attempted to charge Garcia, he became disruptive and threatened them.

Garcia was taken into custody on multiple charges, including:

  • 3 counts of DUI Damage to Property and Personal Injury
  • 2 counts of Battery Touch or Strike
  • Unlawful Blood Alcohol Level 0.15 or Higher
  • Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon
  • Aggravated Assault with the Intent to Commit a Felony
  • Criminal Mischief $1000 or more
  • Battery on Specified Personnel
  • Intimidation Threats Against a Law Enforcement Officer

An investigation into Sunday's accident and assault is ongoing.
