TAMPA -- Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody is trying an old card trick to flush out fugitives in a new round of cold case homicides and persons gone missing.
Back in 2007, her predecessor released a set of cards with photos and details of unsolved crimes. Three inmates reported information that led to the arrest and conviction of Ingrid Lugo's boyfriend in her 2004 murder.
Now. Moody, the state Crime Stoppers association, and Department of Corrections are joining forces with a new deck of cards. Each card will tell the story of a missing person or unsolved homicide. They'll also have information on how to report tips anonymously. More than five thousand decks will be distributed to inmates in Florida's jails and prisons.
Tipsters could be eligible for up to $9,500 for information that solves a cold case.
Several of the cards include cases from the Tampa Bay area. Among them, the King of Hearts is seven-year-old Yitzian Torres-Garcia, shot and killed at a beach on the Courtney Campbell Causeway as gunfire broke out during a July 4th celebration last year. Also in the cards, as the Queen of Clubs, is14-year-old Jabez Spann of Sarasota, who went missing in 2017 and whose body was discovered several years later. Detectives don't know how he was killed.
This follows Moody's rollout of a new Florida Cold Case Investigations Unit, within the Attorney General's Office of Statewide Prosecution.
