Hurricane Season is underway, but FPL says that if you lose your power in a storm they'll have your lights back on quicker than ever before.

Florida Power & Light spokesman Shawn Johnson says that the very busy 2004 and 2005 seasons served as a learning experience.

"We learned a lot coming out of those couple hurricane seasons about the importance of building a stronger, smarter, more storm-resilient grid."

He says the power giant made an effort to strengthen nearly all main power lines that serve critical facilities like police and fire stations and they have buried lines across the state. In fact, Johnson says that 50 percent of FPL's lines are currently buried.

He also credits the Smart Grid technology that allows your power to be turned back on without having to send a worker to your home.

"And of course a big piece of it as well is managing vegetation along thousands of miles of power lines throughout the state. With that being the leading cause of power outages, it's been incredibly helpful to reduce that possible of outages by trimming trees near power lines."

Johnson says homeowners should keep trees trimmed on their property during hurricane season as well.

Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne struck Florida in 2004, followed by another four storms the next year, culminating with Hurricane Wilma in October.

Hurricane Season runs through November and it's forecast to be an extremely busy one..
