Boy Assaulted with Cucumber in Random Attack at Trader Joe's

Davie, FL - Police arrested a 40-year-old woman on Saturday for allegedly committing a random attack on a 9-year-old boy outside a South Trader Joe's.

According to police, a 9-year-old child was struck in the face with a grocery bag containing a cucumber by 40-year-old Nicole Odella Betty of Miami Gardens.

The incident occurred at the Davie Trader Joe's located on South University Drive.

The boy's father, Stuart, who only provided his first name, described the attack as sudden and shocking, telling Local 10 News "We saw this person hit my son in the face."

The victim's father said the blow reportedly broke the cucumber in half.

Police believe Betty may be suffering from mental illness.

The arrest report details her claims that the boy and his family "walked into her bag," were "gang members," and had "planned this" attack.

However, Davie police confirm the assault was unprovoked.

Betty was arrested on child abuse charges and later released on bond.

A background check revealed a previous arrest for criminal mischief in 2019 and a trespassing charge.
