Man Arrested For Stealing Car, Leaving It at Winn-Dixie, Tipping Off Owner

Marion County, FL - A South Florida man faces grand theft auto charges after allegedly stealing a woman's car, then calling her to report the theft himself.

Authorities say Ocala resident Marquis Nance faces grand theft auto charges after allegedly stealing a woman's car and then calling her to report the crime himself.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's Office, the victim contacted authorities after Nance took her vehicle without permission.

The bizarre situation took an even stranger turn when the victim revealed Nance himself called her to inform her of the theft.

Despite his initial "helpfulness," security footage from the Winn-Dixie supermarket on Marion Oaks Boulevard painted a different picture.

Cameras clearly showed Nance exiting the stolen vehicle, contradicting his claims of innocence.

Authorities apprehended Nance, who was also found carrying ammunition during the arrest.

A look into Nance's criminal history revealed outstanding felony charges, including domestic battery and resisting arrest from earlier this year.

The probable cause affidavit for those charges details a disturbing incident where Nance allegedly held a woman against her will during a domestic dispute.

The report further states that Nance became combative when deputies arrived, pushing them during the arrest.

Nance's past also includes a domestic battery by strangulation charge from 2020, though those charges were dropped when the victim could not be located.
