After being closed for 19 years, a historic South Florida hotel is on the road to renovation and reopening.

The Gulfstream Hotel first opened back in 1925, just one block west of the Intracoastal in Lake Worth Beach. But it's been closed since 2005, following two busy hurricane seasons in Palm Beach County.

After several delays, including one blamed on Covid, the city has celebrated the groundbreaking of renovations and a new building next to the existing one.

Dozens of residents joined elected officials at the ceremony Tuesday.

No set date for when the Gulfstream will reopen but when it does, it's estimated to bring in nearly $7.5 million annually.
