The Vero Beach Police Chief has beaten an effort to oust him from office.

Two business owners had reached out to the city manager, claiming crime and low morale within the police department were enough to remove Chief David Currey from his job.

But at Monday's City Council meeting, Currey had his supporters.

"Chief Dave Currey is an honorable man."

City Manager Monte Falls told the council that crime actually declined in Vero between 2015 and 2022 under Currey's leadership, before ticking up last year. He said nothing presented to him rose to the level of termination.

Currey has been chief since 2012 and he's been with the department for over 30 years.

The council passed votes of confidence for both the chief and city manager as well as one to end discussion on the matter.
