Florida Keys Man Arrested For DUI After Car Plunges Into Ocean

Monroe County, FL - A drunk driver in the Florida Keys was rescued by police and arrested for DUI after crashing his car into the ocean.

The accident occurred early Saturday morning at Simonton Beach in the Florida Keys when 41-year-old Michael Lee Grimes drove his car off the road and into the ocean.

According to Key West Police, officers witnessed the incident and jumped into the water, broke the car’s window, and helped Grimes to safety.

Grimes sustained only minor injuries and refused medical attention.

Police say Grimes, unfamiliar with the area, claimed he was following another car that turned just before the water's edge.

However, upon Grimes' return to land, officers detected alcohol on his breath and administered a field sobriety test.

A DUI arrest followed, and Grimes was transported to the Monroe County Detention Center.

"It was fortunate that one of the first officers on the scene had extensive dive training," said Key West Police Chief Sean Brandenburg in a statement. "Their quick response and teamwork were essential in a potentially life-threatening situation."

Grimes’ vehicle was eventually secured to prevent it from floating out to sea.
