The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating along with West Palm Beach Police after a toddler nearly drowned in a lake.

Officials say the 22-month-old got out of his apartment at the Fairway Vista complex on Wednesday while his mother was in the bathroom.

The woman came out and noticed the boy missing and a sliding glass door open. She ran outside and pulled him from a lake, not breathing.

That's where a neighbor who is a certified nursing assistant came in handy.

"My first thought is start compressions, give the child air, whatever you can to try to save this child."

Jermya Adams tells CBS 12 News that her training took over from there until rescue crews arrived and rushed him to a trauma center.

A police spokesman says the child is opening his eyes and has brain activity at the hospital.
