70-Foot Sperm Whale Dies After Being Stranded on Southwest Florida Sandbar

Venice, FL - A 70-foot sperm whale that was beached on a Southwest Florida sandbar has died.

City officials reported that the whale was beached on a sandbar roughly 50 yards from Service Club Park in Venice on Sunday.

Responding to the incident were Venice police, Sarasota County deputies, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) personnel, and Mote Marine Laboratory staff. 

Social media posts from the City of Venice documented the situation, including photos and videos of the beached whale.

The area was closed off to the public as authorities assessed the situation. 

The whale was confirmed dead on Monday morning.
