Reckless Driver Steals Pickup Truck, Evades Deputies Across Counties

Volusia County, FL - A high-speed chase from Lake County to Volusia County ended with the arrest of an 18-year-old man who evaded authorities in a stolen pickup truck.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office arrested 18-year-old Eblair Sylvain on Thursday afternoon after receiving reports of a truck theft from the city of Umatilla.

Body camera footage released by the sheriff's office captured deputies attempting to stop Sylvain as he drove recklessly, surpassing speeds of 100 mph and weaving on and off the road.

According to the sheriff’s office, Sylvain nearly caused several head-on collisions during the pursuit.

Deputies strategically deployed stop sticks on West New York Avenue, near a Circle K gas station outside of DeLand, effectively slowing down Sylvain.

Sylvain, attempting to further evade arrest, bailed out of the pickup truck and ran a short distance into nearby woods.

According to deputies, Sylvain allegedly dropped a handgun at the edge of the woods, which bore a ground-off serial number.

Deputies apprehended Sylvain on charges that include grand theft of a vehicle, grand theft of a firearm, reckless driving, and resisting arrest without violence.

He was booked into the Volusia County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
