Florida's lawmakers are getting ready to head to Tallahassee for this year's Legislative Session next week.

One Palm Beach County Democrat has filed a gun bill, but State Representative Katherine Waldron says HB-259 is not meant to curtail the use of guns.

It calls for anyone firing a gun on their private property to be charged with a first degree misdemeanor if the bullets land outside that property.

"It's been endangering people's lives and neighbors are been getting hit or have seen or heard bullets fly by, so that's a little bit disconcerting."

Waldron says she's spoken with some members of law enforcement who support the bill.

Waldron says it would cover celebratory gunfire, after a New Year's Eve that saw a teen in West Palm Beach hospitalized due to a gunshot wound. But it also covers people shooting at targets outdoors if they endanger someone nearby, but not on the property.

The companion bill in the Senate is being sponsored by fellow Democrat Lori Berman.

The 2024 Legislative Session gets underway next Tuesday, January 9th.
