Man Arrested for Allegedly Choking and Beating Son Over Stolen Marijuana

Miami, FL - A South Florida man has been arrested for allegedly choking and beating his son for taking his marijuana.

Miami Police say 37-year-old Alvaro Alexander Betanco was arrested on charges of battery by strangulation, child neglect without great bodily harm, and child abuse without great bodily harm.

According to police, the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. on October 15th.

The 14-year-old victim told officers that his father had confronted him about the missing marijuana, and the teen admitted to taking it.

Police said that Betanco became angry and grabbed his son by the neck with both hands while the teen was eating dinner at the table.

Betanco eventually released the boy but then began punching him in the chest and stomach.

Betanco then fled the home, leaving the teen alone with his 11-year-old brother.

The victim called 911 and police arrested Betanco.

As of Tuesday afternoon, he was being held at the Metrowest Detention Center in lieu of a $15,000 bond.
