Jury Likely to Get "Take Care of Maya" Civil Case Tuesday

VENICE -- A medical malpractice trial against a St. Petersburg hospital could go to a jury later today in Sarasota County.

Jurors have heard six weeks of testimony in the case of the Kowalski family against Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital, featured in a Netflix documentary, "Take Care of Maya".

The state Department of Children and Families took then ten year old Maya Kowalski into protective custody after the hospital reported that her mother was making her sick with questionable treatments, including ketamine prescribed by doctors in Mexico.

Beata Kowalski committed suicide after losing custody. Her surviving family is asking for more than $200 million.

The hospital argues that it's required to report when it suspects child abuse, and that Maya got better under its care, showing pictures of the now 17-year-old at parties. homecoming and prom.

Deliberations are expected to begin after closing arguments in a Venice courtroom.
