Indian River County School District officials are confirming a case of tuberculosis.
The patient is a student at Storm Grove Middle school and a school district spokeswoman says the school "acted immediately" after being notified by health officials.
The Florida Department of Health says it is following "strict protocol" to identify individuals who were in direct contact with the student.
The CDC says tuberculosis spreads through the air when the person with the disease coughs, speaks or sings. It attacks the lungs but can also attack other organs like the kidney, spine or brain and can be fatal if not treated properly.
