Police Arrest 59-Year-Old Man After High-Speed Pursuit through Biscayne Bay

Miami, FL - Authorities in South Florida arrested a 59-year-old man on Sunday following a boat chase through Biscayne Bay.

The suspect, identified as Carlos Alberto Menendez, allegedly stole a boat in Brickell using a paddleboard to approach and board the vessel, which was moored about 100 feet from the seawall at Brickell Bay Drive.

According to the victim, Menendez freed the boat and powered north towards a nearby marina, before making a daring maneuver, reversing direction, and racing southward toward the Rickenbacker Causeway.

The incident triggered a large-scale response from law enforcement.

Marine officers from Miami, Miami Beach, Miami-Dade County, Coral Gables, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission joined forces in pursuit of Menendez.

During the high-speed chase, Menendez attempted to evade capture by making "various attempts" to ram the police boats, endangering the lives of the officers involved and bystanders in the vicinity.

The pursuit continued as Menendez's vessel raced southbound in the Intracoastal Waterway, near the Dinner Key Marina, before the boat came to an abrupt halt in the southwest area of Key Biscayne and Stiltsville, enabling officers to take Menendez into custody.

Melendez is facing charges of second-degree grand theft, fleeing and eluding police, and reckless operation of a boat.

He's currently detained at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on an $11,000 bond.
