As Governor DeSantis continues to defend Florida's new education standards for teaching Black history, the attacks on those standards continue.

Folks from the local chapter of the NAACP gathered outside the Palm Beach County School District headquarters on Wednesday.

One member who spoke had this to say: "We do have plans to attend school board meetings so that we can get our point across and implore them to find ways to get around this ridiculous curriculum."

It would appear that they have a member of the school board on their side.

"That's a dangerous space to be in when we're talking about history and when we're talking about educating very impressionable people, which are our children."

Edwin Ferguson, who is Black, is referring to the lesson which includes instruction on how slaves developed skills which “in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

Senator Bobby Powell called the curriculum "216 pages of trash."

He plans to take his complaints to Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz, Jr. in attempt to revise the standards, which were just approved by the state Board of Education last week.

"Slavery benefitted no one and we need to make sure that the truth is accurately told from perspectives that are not one sided."

Diaz told school districts in a memo that there are no plans to change the curriculum. In his memo, Diaz writes we will be moving forward with implementing Florida's new history standards.

He adds the standards are supported by historical accounts of African Americans, including slaves and their immediate descendants. Diaz also tweeted, "We will not back down from teaching our nation's true history at the behest of a woke White House."

Governor DeSantis says he wants students to learn all of the history- the 'good, bad and ugly' including injustices like slavery.
