TALLAHASSEE -- A federal judge in Tallahassee blocks parts of Florida's new elections law, calling them ."Florida's latest assault" on the right to vote.
Judge Mark Walker says provisions preventing non-citizens from collecting voter registration applications, and making it a felony for voter registration groups to keep personal information are unconstitutional.
Lawyers for the DeSantis administration have argued that non-citizens "are not bound to the community" and thus can't be trusted to turn in voter applications on time. Walker said in his ruling that the state didn't make the connection between missing deadlines on voter forms and using non-citizens to collect them. Walker also declared that the restriction on keeping personal information was too vague.
Walker's ruling on a 2021 Florida election law has been overturned by an appeals court panel in Atlanta.
