Broward MPO Launches Rail Safety Campaign

Drivers keep stopping their cars on the railroad tracks and getting hit by trains.

That's why the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization is teaming up with cities from Deerfield Beach to Hallandale Beach, plus Brightline and Florida East Coast Railway to launch a new multi-platform rail safety campaign today reminding people of the dangers.

Executive Director Greg Stuart says they're going to be sending out mailers, posting signs at railroad crossings, hitting the airwaves and asking businesses to get involved by putting up signage about rail safety.

He stresses since trains are traveling faster now, after the gates go down, they will go back up faster.

Because the west tracks are also quiet zones, they are working on a new campaign with TriRail as well.

Just yesterday, a pedestrian was killed by a train at Hillsboro Boulevard and Dixie Highway.
