License plate readers are about to go up across the Village of Palm Springs.
"We're just about to install them. It isn't in place yet but we have 12 that should be placed within the next two to three weeks."
Police Chief Tom Ceccarelli says the technology will help his officers quickly respond to suspect vehicles.
"It captures the license plates on the vehicles of every car that passes by. It runs them against a database of stolen vehicles, stolen tags, various different databases. And once it passes through, it gives us an alert of that vehicle being in the area."
He says the readers will be placed on main interior roadways in Palm Springs and will also help with investigations after local crimes occur.
"It also keeps a database of these vehicles so you can go back historically and see if you had a crime in an area, you can see what vehicles were passing through at that time of the day when the crime occurred."
The chief says the names of those roadways are not made public.
