Miami Launching Community Emergency Response Team Program

The City of Miami is looking for a few good men and women who want to help their neighbors in their most desperate time of need.

Because Miami's Urban Search and Rescue team, while one of the best trained in the world, can't always immediately respond to emergencies, the city's launching a Community Emergency Response Team.

The program will train residents in basic emergency response including performing CPR, basic search and rescue and crisis tracking resources.

Mayor Francis Suarez says, "in 95% of emergencies the victim or bystanders provide the first assistance on the scene."

These trained CERT members will be able to help until the professionals arrive.

The volunteer training takes place over three days, and participants must be at least 18, have valid Florida driver's licenses, live or work in the city and pass background checks.

The first round of training is expected to begin next month.
