UPDATE: As of 5 p.m., officials said that the scene has been cleared and the area is safe.

During a press conference after the shooting, officials said that eight police officers were shot while a U.S. Marshalls task force was serving a warrant for a convicted felon in possession of an illegal firearm. Four members of the task force were shot, and three of them died. Four officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department were also shot, and one is in critical condition. The other officers are in stable condition.

The suspect was shot and killed, while two others inside the home were taken into custody for questioning.

Numerous police officers were shot during a barricade situation in a Charlotte, North Carolina, neighborhood on Monday (April 29) afternoon. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said that "multiple" people were rushed to the hospital.

Shots rang out just before 2 p.m. during a U.S. Marshalls Task Force investigation on Galway Drive. The task force was made up of officers from multiple law enforcement agencies.

According to WCNC, a deputy U.S. Marshal was shot along with three other local police officers. No information has been provided about their conditions.

Officials closed down roads throughout the neighborhood and several nearby highways to allow ambulances to get to and from the scene faster.

Authorities said the situation remains active and urged people to avoid the area. Just after 3 p.m., the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department posted on X that there was still "active gunfire on scene."
