A 43-year-old woman and her four-year-old son were killed by her ex-boyfriend in a murder-suicide outside of a bank in West Kendall, Florida, on Friday (June 7).
The Miami-Dade Police Department said that 41-year-old Michael Andres Pineda Lozano pulled up alongside a minivan driven by Odalys Maria Bancroft while she was waiting in line to use a Chase Bank ATM.
Lozano then started shooting into Bancroft's vehicle with a rifle, killing her and her four-year-old son Theodore Couto. He then turned the gun on himself.
"I just can't imagine any situation that would bring a normal person to do this sort of thing to a woman and her child," Bancroft's brother, Michael Trujillo, told WTVJ.
Lozano was not the child's father.
Authorities have not released a motive for the shooting, but WPLG reported that Bancroft had recently filed a restraining order against her ex.
"I just pray that this doesn't keep happening again," Couto's aunt told WSVN. "We have to protect our women out there, and we have to protect our kids, and something needs to happen because this is happening every day."
