Florida News August 10th

This is a quick recap of some of the biggest news from around the state that impacts you in South Florida.

Florida’s daily average in new coronavirus cases continued to trend lower through the weekend and the daily average trend is now the lowest since June 28th. Also, Brightline, which hasn’t operated since the onset of the pandemic, has disclosed it’s no longer associated with Virgin Enterprises. The partnership with Virgin struck in 2018 and included rebranding under the Virgin name. All Brightline properties are now back to being Brightline.

The two most recent Florida property insurers to present to the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Southern Fidelity Insurance Co. and Capitol Preferred Insurance Co., have asked for increases for 30%+ and 20%+ for policy renewals going forward. The sharp increases which have yet to be ruled on by state regulators could indicate stress within Florida’s property insurance market once again. This could mean much higher insurance rates going forward.

Several school districts across the state are reopening today, including Orange County. Martin begins tomorrow. All South Florida school districts have delayed the start of the school year until the end of August with online-only options.
