Tuesday brought the second-highest single-day total for COVID-19 worldwide. There are now 9,369,227 cases, 480,095 deaths, and 5,060,547 recoveries. This was led by continued spikes in Brazil, Russia, India, and the United States. Speaking of the US, we had our third-highest day for new cases since the pandemic began and with over 36,000 newly diagnosed cases, the highest daily total since May 1st. There are now 2,388,225 cases, 122,611 deaths, and 1,003,062 recoveries in the US. It also was the deadliest since June 11th, the news just wasn’t great. There are now more total active cases in the US than at any prior time.
In Florida, it was a different version of a similar thing. We now have 100,217 cases, 3,176 deaths, and 19,517 recoveries. In other words, 3,286 newly diagnosed cases on Tuesday, an increase over Monday’s total and the fourth highest day for new cases. We also had 64 related deaths, the highest daily total since June 2nd. Like the country, there are now more active cases in Florida than at any prior time.
South Florida remains the epicenter of the virus with Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties having the most cases in that order. There are 10 new south Florida hot spots over the past day and a total of 66 zip codes in South Florida which are hot spots.
The overall positive test rate continues to rise as well in Florida. After reaching a low of 5.2% around three weeks ago, the rate since testing began has risen to 6.3%, continuing the three-week trend of higher cases along with a higher percentage of positive test results. We’re seeing the spike in cases coming from both an increase in testing and predominantly from increased community spread.
The average age of someone diagnosed with COVID-19 continues to drop. The average diagnosed Floridian has dropped to 43 (after a recent high of 54). We’re continuing to see the fastest increase coming from those between the ages of 25-34, which likely speaks to younger adults being more reckless and less likely to follow safety protocols. We’re seeing the spike in cases coming from both an increase in testing and community spread.
Despite the most recent news Florida continues to outperform the country since the onset of the pandemic. Florida remains 7th in total cases nationally, while the state is now 9th in deaths. Florida is the third-most populous state. With over 122,000 deaths attributed to COVID-19, it is the deadliest virus in the United States since the 1918 pandemic which killed over 675,000 Americans.
