Protests Could Lead State to Change Its Name

America's smallest state has the distinction of having the longest name.

Li'l Ol' Rhode Island is actually "The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations."

The "Plantations" part of the state name has been under more scrutiny following the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests.

Governor Gina Raimondo issued an executive order that will drop "Providence Plantations" from official documents, but voters will have to amend the state constitution to make the name change perfect.

An effort to trim the Ocean State's full name failed in 2010 when 78% of voters rejected the idea.
