State Ordered to Pay for Inmate's Sex Change Surgery

A federal appeals court says the state of Idaho must pay for a transgender prison inmate's sex reassignment surgery.

Adree Edmo has been living as a woman for years but is being housed in a men's prison.

It's been seven years since the 31-year-old was diagnosed with gender dysmorphia.

Edmo's lawyer says the prison would treat an inmate with cancer or diabetes and this diagnosis is no different.

Edmo is a convicted sex offender who is due to be released from prison in 2021.

The state says it will appeal the decision to the U.S. Supreme Court.
