Miami Beach Police Begin Spring Break Crackdown

Police officers wearing riot gear will be patrolling Miami Beach all weekend, confiscating alcohol and drugs, turning down boom boxes, and trying to keep the Spring Break party from getting out of control.

Teams of officers were deployed on the beach yesterday, with backup provided by police on ATVs.

Chief Dan Oates says pairs of officers will be on every street corner in South Beach throughout the weekend.

Last weekend, 97 people were arrested and police estimate crowds are up 30-percent compared to one year ago.

The annual Spring Break reason runs through the end of March.
