Suspended Broward Sheriff Files Suit To Get Job Back

Suspended Broward Sheriff Scott Israel filing a court petition challenging the legal authority of Governor Ron DeSantis who removed him from office. The documents, filed today, say DeSantis exceeded his authority when he suspended Israel. In his State of the State address Tuesday, DeSantis discussed holding people accountable post-Parkland and he urged lawmakers to uphold the suspension. The final say lies with the Florida Senate which has the authority to decide the fate of a public official removed from office by the governor. Just days after taking office, DeSantis removed Israel and replaced him with Gregory Tony following the outcry from relatives of the victims of the Parkland massacre. At the time, DeSantis said the massacre "may never have happened had Broward had better leadership in the sheriff's department."
