The second case of West Nile virus has been confirmed in Palm Beach County after the most recent discovery in chickens on one farm in Jupiter.
Florida Department of Health officials confirmed the discovery of the virus at a farm in Belle Glade.
DOH officials say chickens at farms across the county are tested weekly with blood samples being sent to state offices for the presence of mosquito-borne illnesses.
Officials advise all residents to avoid having standing water around their homes as mosquitos can leave eggs in even small areas – while also making sure windows and doors are screened properly.
The Centers for Disease Control say one in five people infected by the virus develop symptoms that include a fever while one in 150 people can develop an illness that sometimes is fatal.
