Move Over, Red Tide, Brown Water Is Posing Threat To SWFL Beaches

In addition to red tide, Southwest Florida beaches are dealing with another problem in the water.

Beach visitors have reported seeing brown water in the last week or so.

It has discouraged some from going into the water, but scientists say, unlike red tide, the organism responsible for the brown water is not harmful to humans.

A scientist at Florida Gulf Coast University tells the Naples Daily News, though, that the organism does pose a problem for fish as it can deplete the water's oxygen levels.
