Police are investigating an overnight crash in Fort Lauderdale that left a man in a wheelchair dead.
Fort Lauderdale Police responded to the scene near Northwest Seventh Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard at around 1 a.m., Wednesday.
Witnesses say the victim was very well known in the area as a panhandler.
Crews removed the man’s body from the scene, as well as a mangled wheelchair.
Witnesses familiar with the victim said he was paralyzed from the waist down.
At this point it is unknown if police are looking for a driver or if anyone has been taken into custody.
Sunrise Boulevard was shut down near Northwest Fifth Avenue. However, the road has since reopened.
