FHP Reminds Drivers To STAY SAFE In School Zones

The Florida Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to pay attention when driving through school zones.

Authorities with FHP say a driver in a red SUV struck a school crossing guard while making a left turn into an intersection Monday morning in Clay County.

The crossing fell to the ground and witnesses immediately rushed over to help.

Officials posted to Twitter, advising drivers to "please pay attention while driving in school zones." Adding that "our children’s safety depends on it."

Drivers should be alert and watch for children near school zones, bus stops, school buses, and in school parking lots, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

Drivers should also be aware of the lower speed limits in school zones.

Authorities said the crossing guard was transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries, and the driver of the vehicle was cited for the crash.
