A Florida convenience store clerk fatally shot a man who was trying to steal $36 worth of beer from his store, police said.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office has charged 22-year-old Mehedeun Hasan with second-degree murder.
Hasan has been in jail since last week's shooting, but his charge was elevated after 43-year-old Rennie Defoe Jr. died Saturday.
According to officials, Defoe entered the Lakeland store, picked up three 18-packs of Natural Ice beer from the beer cooler, and then walked out of the store without paying.
Defoe was already in his car and backing out of a parking spot when Hasan ran outside and opened fire. sheriff's officers said. Defoe was taken to a nearby hospital, where he eventually died.
Hasan was being held without bond.
