Congressman Brings Algae Filled St. Lucie River Water To House Floor

A Treasure Coast lawmaker is saying, too much, too little, too late...

Even though the Army Corps of Engineers started reducing Lake Okeechobee water releases to the east and west today - sending it south into the Everglades instead - Congressman Brian Mast says the damage is already done.

This morning he delivered to the House Floor a jar of algae-filled water from the St. Lucie River.

He says, "You can see exactly how disgusting it is.  What you can not see is the disgusting smell that emanates from it.  You can not see the toxin that are inside of it.  You can not see the airborne pathogens the come off of it."

He says the government owes Treasure Coast residents an explanation on what are dangerous levels of algae.

Back in 2016 the water releases into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee Rivers caused toxic algae to showed up on both sides of the coast.
