Red Tides Continue Throughout Southwest Florida Coast, FWC Says

The red tide is continuing across the southwest Florida coast.

Samples collected in Collier, Lee, Hillsborough, Sarasota, Charlotte and Monroe counties over the past week indicate a few fish kills and respiratory irritations.

FWC says red tides are a natural part of the ecosystem, but they can bloom to high concentrations when conditions favor it.

Red tide is a common name for an algal bloom caused by a few species of dinoflagellates. The bloom takes on a red or brown color.
