Hallandale Beach City Mayor Joy Cooper was arrested by the FBI Thursday on multiple charges:

  1. Money laundering (3rd Degree Felony)
  2. Official Misconduct (3rd Degree Felony)
  3. Campaign Financing/Exceeding Limits on Contributions (3rd Degree Felony)
  4. Campaign Financing/Soliciting Contributions in Government Building (1st Degree Misdemeanor)

Each of the 3rd Degree Felonies is punishable by up to five years. A First Degree Misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year.

Officials with the Broward State Attorney's Office say Cooper has already surrendered.

The City of Hallandale Beach released a statement claiming they became aware of Cooper's arrest at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

"The City will fully cooperate with any investigation and will extend full cooperation with any law enforcement agencies," the statement said. "Residents should know that we will continue City Business as usual and operate under the processes defined by the City Charter."

The case is being handled by members of the Special Prosecutions and Public Corruption Unit.
