Grafitti Artists Reach Settlement With BCSO Over Dog Bite Case

Two graffiti artists are getting some sense of justice after a claim of police brutality after nearly four years.

The Broward County Sheriff's Office has announced that a settlement has been reached in the case of two well-known graffiti artists, 39-year-old Humberto Pellegrino and 38-year-old Pedro Claveria, who were spray-painting freight trains and gondolas when deputies showed up on the night of Jan. 17, 2014.

The two men claim they immediately surrendered but the deputies then instructed their police dogs to attack them even though they were not resisting arrest.

They said the deputies used excessive and unnecessary force because they were not trying to escape.

The pair will split $175,000 dollars from the settlement against deputies Gerald “Jerry” Wengert, Davis “Chris” Acevedo and Leonard Smith, the Broward Sheriff’s Office confirmed on Tuesday.
