Miami-Dade police is investigating after two Pretrial Detention Center inmates died and others were hospitalized after suffering apparent drug overdoses.
Detectives want to know how the drugs - believed to be either heroin or fentanyl - were smuggled behind bars.
Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department Interim Director Daniel Junior says, "Miami Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department would like to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased. MDCR correctional officers responded appropriately and timely to a medical emergency to include emergency room transportation. Miami Dade Police Department is conducting an investigation, which is the normal protocol. Due to the on-going nature of the investigation, no further comment can be made at this time."
