Man With Missing Wife Pleads Guilty To Transporting Stolen Coins

A South Florida man who reported his new wife missing while sailing in the Caribbean this past spring has pleaded guilty to transporting as much as $100,000 in stolen coins.

Forty-year-old Lewis Bennett now faces up to 10 years in prison. He entered his plea Thursday in Miami federal court.

Earlier this year, he was found in a raft after his 37-foot catamaran sank near the Bahamas. He told the Coast Guard he didn't know where his wife, Isabella Hellman, was.

Among his belongings were $100,000 in coins that had been stolen in St. Maarten last year.

His wife's disappearance also remains under investigation.

Neither the FBI nor the Coast Guard has said whether it suspects foul play.
