An incident with a violent suspect is an example of how dangerous police work can be.
A judge had just ordered 29-year-old Godel Leveille to be taken into custody based on an arrest warrant of battery on law enforcement officers, court records show.
But as an officer was taking him into custody, Leveille is accused of biting officer Anthony Pando's arm.
Half a dozen Miami-Dade officers came to Pando's assistance and subdued the suspect.
Witnesses say Pando was screaming as the suspect bit into his arm. He was taken to a hospital to be treated. Miami-Dade police spokesman Argemis Colome said the officer suffered a “severe injury.”
Newscast video showed Leveille with a net mask over his face to prevent him from biting or spitting another officer as he was taken out of the justice building and placed inside a police car.
Along with his original charges, Leveille was booked into jail on additional charges that included aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence and disorderly conduct, Miami-Dade court records show.
He is being held without bond.
